12. Legion Park/City Hall Parking Lot – Burma Shave Signs

The in-store dragon hunt portion of Suddenly Dragons is over as of September 1st, although the wind dragons and the burmashave signs are up through the 19th — but all the dragons can now be found online for your hunting convenience.

Thanks to the downtown merchants, the artists who participated, the Arlington Arts Council for assistance, and of course the Mayor and City Council of Arlington, who created the funding that made this possible.

Burmashave Poem

We all know dragons love poetry, right? This particular poem was written in the Burmashave format especially for Suddenly Dragons by Ron Silvern, Trafton’s Poet Laureate. He is a mysterious figure who does not make public appearances – he prefers to let his work speak for itself… you can find it outside the Arlington Depot along the Centennial Trail.

Wind Dragons

The Wind Dragons are based on the wind socks seen around Arlington Airport, crossed with Japanese carp socks and maybe a dash of kite in them as well…a lot of things went into the blender. Their creator, Monica Bretherton, started with a roll of tyvek, some acrylic paint, foam floor mats and a hot glue gun. Then dragons happened, as they do. They are also to be found along the Centennial Trail.

Sidewalk Dragon

Artist Erika Bruss, assisted by a team of young artists, used chalk and pastels and a lot of imagination to create this sea-serpent on the sidewalk at Legion Memorial Park. Chalk is a very ephemeral medium – so we took lots of pictures!

Hidden Dragons

Thanks so much to the downtown stores who hosted our dragons:

Found It, Ava Rose Boutique, Flowers by George, Perfectly Knotty, Arlington Muffler & Brake, Save the Day Floral and the Arlington Co-op Garden Center.

And of course to the participating artists: Karen Lewis, Erika Bruss, Mike Nordine, Monica Bretherton, Niki Spencer, Jennifer Carroll, Coe Blackwell and Sarah Arney.

Dragon Fly-In

Arlington’s not the only town with Dragons!

Snohomish, Kirkland, Bellingham, Shoreline, Everett – they have all flown dragons in to help us. You can check them out at the Arlington Depot.
